I have included the sections of the booklet that offer safe solutions and
have omitted the sections that advocate chemical/toxic solutions. I have
also listed several resources for more information on natural, organic
Integrated Pest Management. please see page 17
for some links to alternative methods of disease and insect control.
I apologize for not including the pages as part of this historical
document but I cannot in good conscience publish methods so totally against
my beliefs.
On the following two pages, if a remedy is not listed for the disease or
pest it has been intentionally omitted. Try links on page
17 to find solutions. |

PREVENTIVES AND REMEDIES
NOTE: It is important that immediate attention be given insects and
diseases as soon as they appear. Delay may prove fatal. |

ASPARAGUS |
|
Rust末(Rusty appearance of leaves and stems)末Procure rust resistant
variety, such as Reading Giant or Palmetto. |
Beetles末(Eat young stems and leaves) |

BEETS |
Leaf spot末(Reddish and purple spots, turning ashy gray)末Usually not
affecting garden beets.
Web worm末(Eats the leaves) |
Spinach aphis末(Sucks sap from leaves)

BUSH BEANS |
Anthracnose末(Dark, sunken spots, scab-like, on pods; spots on
leaves)末Pick and burn diseased pods. In saving seed discard those from
diseased plants, as seed carry the infection.
Leaf beetles末(Very small, dark or pale stripes; eat leaves) |
Aphids or plant lice末(Suck sap from plant and make leaves crumple)
Bacterial blight末(Water soaked spots on leaves and pods)末No
satisfactory remedy. Pull up and burn plants.

CABBAGE AND CAULIFLOWER |

Preventive: In spring apply 1 lb. lime to each 8 sq.
ft. of ground before setting out plants.
Black rot末(Leaves turn yellow, then brown and black and decay)末
Pull up and burn plants).
Yellows末(Leaves turn yellow, then brown, and drop)末Pull up and burn
plants.

Cabbage Maggots末(Tunnel inside of roots)
Preventive: When plants are set out take a piece of
tarred building paper 2 or 3 inches in diameter, cut a slit from one side to
center, and 4 or 5 slits at center. Fit this around stem by slipping plant
through the long slit, and press paper firmly against ground, to prevent
young maggots from reaching root.
Black leg末(Diseased, sunken areas on stem, leaf stem and leaves,
plant becoming purplish.)末There is no remedy. Pull up and burn plants.
Cutworms末(Dark colored, eat young plants off at surface of earth). |

Preventive: Care should be taken to water and partially
